'Set Pieces' at Cardi Black Box, Milan

Arts contributor YANYAN HUANG travels the world in search of big game. This week she reports back from Milan.

At the end of a hidden courtyard and kitty-corner to a modeling agency stands Cardi Black Box gallery. The current show, Set Pieces, curated by Andrew Berardini and Lauren Mackler, is inspired by William Leavitt's paintings of interiors. The exhibition brings together several prominent Los Angeles-based artists in loosely related installations

The sets created by Sarah Cain, Liz Glynn, Mateo Tannatt, and Samara Golden provide space for untethered narratives that transform the viewing process into a multi-faceted study. Samara Golden's white curtained room with a mirrored floor and black lights conjures up an eerie atmosphere. Liz Glynn's cast sculptures of hands, facemasks, and intestinal objects hint at remnants of violence. Adjacent is an operating table with a Raymond Pettibon print at the head and a gessoed white sheet cast aside at the foot. The sheet reveals a thick red cross—the international aid sign or surgical residue? Amanda Ross-Ho's green screen-colored canvases are placed sedately throughout the show, creating a parallel between the entertainment industry's illusionistic possibilities and the possibilities inherent in the creation of art. Set Pieces is a delightful jaunt into ambiguousness.
