Well into its fourth edition, this year ART LOS ANGELES CONTEMPORARY expanded its on-site and satellite programming with a diverse range of openings, screenings, and performances. At the entrance of the ALAC tents, Jon Pylypchuk's giant cigarette butts stood guard (albeit pitifully), appearing again in strategic areas of the lounge. Also on display in the lounge was the MOCA TV initiative, screening Eugene Kotlyarenko's miniseries, Feast of Burden.
On Saturday night, Machine Project gallery held several special performances inside a storefront on North Alvarado, as part of "Paris At Your Home," a yearlong exchange program between Parisian and Los Angeles artists. Davide Balula's Analog Heart performance saw firefighter Kevin Kinnon demonstrate CPR to a bewildered set of spectators, who shortly became participants. Set to a symphony of live analog synthesizer sounds, the spectacle of a dozen adults furiously pumping away on plastic chests must have stopped many passersbys in their tracks. Disbelief woven with death made for a strangely humorous experience—but then, why should death be somber?
On the other side of downtown LA, Night Gallery gave an architectural tour of their new space, led by the gallery's architect Peter Zellner, whose other projects include LAXART and Matthew Marks. Sean Townley's inaugural exhibition in the space drew close to a 1,000 people, helping to cement Night Gallery as a major player on the Los Angeles art landscape.
Impressive not just for its cohesion, Art Los Angeles Contemporary and the participating institutions have continually proven their dedication to helping Los Angeles become a major cultural force.
