'Rotary Connection' at Casey Kaplan

In the first NYC group show of the year, Casey Kaplan gallery has brought together 13 multi-disciplinary artists—Benoit Maîre, Marlo Pascual, Jason Dodge, and Andrew Kuo to name a few. Of the many pieces delicately scattered around the three rooms, I particularly enjoyed my interaction with Maîre’s Le Nez, perhaps an obvious choice, but still! This tripod, constructed with bronze and wood, has a remarkably long barrel-like nose extending from the apex. Be warned, this piece creeps up on you and has the potential to poke a tall man’s eye out! In the first and final rooms hung Andrew Kuo’s acrylic pieces: his broad brushtrokes in Self-Portrait (Slice) feel many moons away from the extremely astute What If This Guy Was a Figment of My Imagination? This is a fun show demonstrating the standing diversity of the New York contemporary art scene.

The exhibition continues through February 11, 2012.
