Opening Ceremony Women's Spring/Summer 2015: The Lookbook

$

For Spring/Summer 2015, Opening Ceremony brings it back to the innocent, hazy dreams of suburban life. Before the responsibilities of adulthood set in, there were outdoor pools, indoor malls, and teen naïveté. We spent the summer of 1991 in this world, circling cul-de-sacs and breaking into pools. It was a quiet kind of rebellion, before subversion had consequences and the Internet would diffuse a thousand wayward voices into complex subcultures.

In the days before the Internet, communication was simpler: letters, numbers, and punctuation. Taking inspiration from early computer technology, we created patterns and shapes modeled after ASCII code. Body-con dresses and structured coats with clean lines are texturized with custom prints of keyboard characters. Layered hemlines, mesh trims, and stacked welt pockets emulate the angles of repeating symbols. The color palette, meanwhile––blush and tangier pinks, ceramic and palladium greens, and cerulean––recalls suburban yards in the early hours of dawn, when a group of friends might slip in for a swim. Trapeze-like blouses fasten with hand-lock closures, conjuring the fences that would enclose these yards. Woven and embossed jacquards mimic the surreal topography of pools. Laminated fabrics, tile-like grommets that open to skin, and magnifying beads reinforce the water theme, while silhouettes like a one-sleeve coat and an asymmetric, laser-cut skirt play with perspective.

Spring/Summer 2015 handbags reinterpret classic shapes in custom prints and colors. A mini shoulder bag comes in an all-over ASCII pattern, while a structured tote is cloaked in dreamy, psychedelic faces. Our Izzy backpack and Lele handbag, seen in previous collections, are reimagined in miniature sizes. Sky-high printed snake wedges sport wrap-around ankle straps, while city boots get a feminine update with overlapping hardware and a leather, stacked-platform sole. The signature Opening Ceremony hand detail is back in new iterations, on a series of totes, wallets, and even key chains. Also featured among Opening Ceremony's accessories collection is the MICA (My Intelligent Communication Accessory) bracelet, designed by Opening Ceremony and engineered by Intel. Coming this holiday season, MICA is available in both black and white snakeskins with semi-precious stones, including lapis, pearl, tiger's eye, and obsidian.

Mustard On The Beat: The Opening Ceremony Afterparty

While fashion week is normally a time where ladies in white Jacquemus dresses avoid stain-ready condiments and other unpredictable fashion dangers, the OC crowd couldn’t get enough of DJ Mustard's beats at last night's Opening Ceremony afterparty. Co-hosted by Intel, the tech brains behind the MICA smart bracelet which debuted that evening, the party was a celebration of 100% Lost Cotton, the one-act play by Spike Jonze and Jonah Hill that was our Spring/Summer 2015 fashion show.

After two stellar performances at the Metropolitan Opera, cast headed to the party for a private dinner along with VIP guests, hosted by Bud Light Platinum and catered by Chalk Point Kitchen. Bud Light Platinum flowed all night as more guests arrived, alongside drinks from Svedka, Vita Coco, and TY KU Sake. Heels were thrown aside to dance to the sounds of DJs Win Butler of Arcade Fire, Nguzunguzu, and N** Sky. After an incredible night, one important realization came to fruition: the only thing better than sitting next to Rosario Dawson in the front row is dancing next to her while DJ Mustard spins his hits.

It used to be, if you were getting drafted for the military or headed into the wilderness, you would leave with a stack of survival cards—all very necessary if you're weathering harsh, elemental conditions. By no means are we comparing New York Fashion Week to a longish camping expedition, but it can get pretty funky out there. To the rescue: Opening Ceremony's NYFW Survival Cards.

The end of Fashion Week is near (at least here in New York—the international circuit is ready for the baton), 100% Lost Cotton at the Metropolitan Opera House was a success, and now, it's time to get comfs. Throw on a versatile jacket (our model citizen wears the OC Exclusive Varsity Jacket) over whatever non-outfit you'd like, and call it a day. Do try this at home.

Surreal And So Real: Delfina Delettrez Fall/Winter 2014

While the name Delfina Delettrez has become synonymous with the evil eye and decadent stones, the designer went the more refined and defined route for her Fall/Winter 2014 collection. After dipping into the furrier side of the jewlery spectrum with her Fendi collaboration last season, Delettrez tapped into her surreal sensibilities and created earrings, rings, and necklaces of a strikingly simple aesthetic.

For this latest line, Delettrez introduces a progressive collection with colorful precious stones at the forefront. The designer delved deep into the 1980s art world, even releasing Daniel Sannwald's video Gold Vein in conjunction with the collection. With checkerboard floors, sunset clouds, and vivid imagery accenting the jewlery pieces, these are gems that Louise Bourgeois, and even Magritte, would have stood behind. Check out some of our exclusive Delfina Delettrez jewelry pieces and make sure to watch the Gold Vein video short to get a sense of her surreal state of mind.

Elle Fanning, who played a wide-eyed model from the sticks in 100% Lost Cotton, our one-act play and Spring/Summer 2015 "runway" show, has more than 20 movies under her belt—at the ripe age of 16. The starlet also has a killer singing voice (as anyone who caught her rendition of Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" during the play knows) and an eye for photography. Last week, she brought her instant camera to play rehearsals, held at St. Ann's Warehouse in Dumbo, Brooklyn, and captured some off-the-cuff moments with the cast and crew. Common Scents: The Evolution Of Calvin Klein Campaigns

$

They say odors have more powers of persuasion than words and appearances. How exactly is one of America's most storied fragrance brands seducing us? Fiona Duncan explains.

Obsession was lust. Youth. The unattainable. Kate Moss’ elastic skin against cracked stone. Classical bodies cut off mid-limb at the ad page’s edge (Vogue’s Venus di Milos). Also, all the big Os: orgasms, orgies, and oculi; eyes, eye-round breasts, and, in turn, Bruce Weber and Mario Sorrenti’s lenses. The fragrance’s serif label was often paired with the fine subtext “for men.” On the television spots, a woman’s voice whispered, "Between love and madness lies obsession." The smell was “sensual, woody.” The bottle—a redacted teardrop or short pool. Where there was water, this scent was always shallow. Shallow like a lake from which Kate’s face surfaced, or a Roman bath from which Gemma Ward’s sweet teen bottom buoyed.

The ocean belonged to Eternity and Escape.

Eternity was familial love. A man and his wife. Mother and children. Boundless seas and fresh laundry. The atmosphere was sexy but not rapturous. Eternity’s relations were performed for the public, a class act. The ads evoked candidly-posed wedding portraits or snapshots from a third anniversary vacation abroad on the Côte d’Azur. Hands were clasped, gazes locked. The bottle was squared with a silver turn top, like a lock and eye. It came in two shapes: one taller and broader than the other, more curvilinear, “for men and women.” Christy Turlington was Eternity’s '90s Madonna.

Escape was the whore. His mistress. (Again, “for men.”) In her, for him, passion was reignited. Escape was a vacation—rhythmic shores. Escape was clandestine—Milla Jovovich groped in a hallway. “Take me” was the tagline. The bottle looked more like a boner than any other.

Clothes were rare in Obsession, white in Eternity, and poised to be torn off in Escape. All of the ads were monochrome—black and white, gray scale, or sepia (one exceptional Obsession ad from 1985 is luminously black and blue; it glows like a dark room lit by a television screen).

Shot by Mario Sorrenti, CK One's new campaign features Taeyang, Dev Hynes, Samantha Urbani, Kelela, and more.

For Fall 2014, Calvin Klein Collection for men channeled the brand’s iconic fragrances. A logomaniacal sweatshirt trifecta comes in the same neutral tones as the '80s and '90s ads. Obsess over golden-beige tan. Escape to heather brown. Charcoal is eternal. The sweatshirt’s cut is both a throwback and current. Boxy with drop shoulders, fashion only started adopting this recent vintage in the last few years. The collection’s coordinating slacks and shirts are archetypal, sturdy, and refined. Future plain basics, they remind me of Telfar’s “Extremely Normal™” orientation.

This nostalgic collection comes at the same time as a reboot of Calvin Klein’s “fragrance for everyone,” CK One. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the unisex scent, the brand created a new campaign which was disseminated via Snapchat and

How is it that just a few days ago, the city was under an armpit of heatwave, and tonight, the temperature is dropping to 65° F? This writer is currently typing away at her desk in, yes, layers. Epecially at the shows, when you're at the mercy of blasting AC one moment, beelining to your Uber the next, then groovin' at an afterparty, then in a chilly 2 AM line at Duane Reade with Advil and coconut water—having a good sweater or scarf or cardigan (or all three!) is of supreme necessity.

Model Diary: OC's Sean Risley At Mark McNairy

Designer Mark McNairy's shows are famous for being unconventional. Last year, Cam'ron showed up in a cape, and this year, Travi$ Scott walked––or rather, leaped––down the runway. OC's Sean Risley also modeled for his second season, strutting with a signature Heineken bottle in hand. Here, his dispatch from the show.

Mark McNairy and I first met at Ben’s Pizza in Soho, a neighborhood mainstay that also made an appearance in one of my favorite films, Men in Black II. Since then, we’ve worked together on a few lookbooks, and now, two runway shows. Mark’s a man of few words, but his clothes speak volumes. He has great taste in music (and an eclectic circle of mutual friends) and very entertaining Twitter and Instagram accounts. His shows have an “anything goes” feel to them; nobody knows really what will happen or who might show up. Check out these snaps (and more of my Fashion Week highlights) above!

On The Origin Of Bad Bitches

$

The editor of The Harvard Lampoon opines on the vagaries of bitchdom

When Charles Darwin published his essential treatise on natural selection in 1859, he forever changed the way we talk about evolution. This document would become the foundation of entire fields of study, from psychology to genetics, but not before theologians, governments, and even other biologists immediately tried to discredit it. In short, when Darwin dropped the scientific equivalent of Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, the reactions of bitches the world over were predictably, dishearteningly basic.

With regard to the ubiquity of basic bitches, not much has changed in the nearly 200 years that have since passed. In general, bitches have been around since the dawn of time, from the first sassy single-celled prokaryote. But, until recently, the bitch was always undesirable, the girl in your Garden of Eden who never could follow simple directions. Today, however, evolution has brought us something new—a wondrous breed of this ill-fated genus. Everyone can be a bitch, but it is the particular species of bitch that moves the needle.

To find a bitch of the "basic" phenotype, one needn't look further than a city-block radius on any given day. As my grandmother used to say, leaning back in her Tuscan leather armchair, Egyptian-cotton blanket wrapped tightly around her perfectly accessorized frame, “Close your eyes. Throw a stone. Hit a basic bitch.” The trappings of basicness are the components of modern existence at its least common denominators: a pumpkin-spice latte in her French-manicured hand, a complete lack of self-awareness, and a vocal inflection that makes statements sound like questions. Like the dumbass molecules of a bum-ass chain, these elements arise from the primordial ooze and link to form a simple being.

“So, like, I went to the mall?” opines the basic bitch, enthralling her flock of beta bum bitches with her honed ability to treat the simplest of activities with introspection and reverence. A trip to the mall, the fucking mall, requires two hours of conversation. She thinks her scarf from Forever 21 is vintage. She knows nothing of philosophy, politics, fine arts, business, science, language, or style. Her only area of study is pop culture, and even that she has yet to master as she mistakenly uses “turn up” as a noun.

I mentioned a female in the previous example, but basic bitchiosity extends beyond lines of gender. The male-identifying basic bitch shares similar characteristics, although often expressed differently. Basic boys think their feverish grip on antiquated concepts of masculinity somehow makes them different, or more real, than guys who don’t need to brawl or watch sports to feel like valid humans. These bros ain't loyal, and they wear their disloyalty as a badge of honor, not realizing it makes them all exactly the same. They are as shallow as their empty Natty Lights and believe the nonsensical half-sentences they say while high are some of the deepest thoughts they've ever had.

Who then, is the Bad Bitch? Who is this creature who walks heads above the rest with the confidence of a peacock, the intelligence of a jungle cat, and the unbridled sexuality of... some sort of animal it’s socially acceptable to be attracted to?

Though definitions vary, foremost, the Bad Bitch is a revolutionary. To the Bad Bitch, life is a sport, and she is winning. Basic bitches tremble when she walks into the room, their cheaply glossed mouths opening wide as they observe the Bad Bitch in her natural habitat. The Bad Bitch is the musical muse of top-grossing musicians, inspiring hip-hop artists to sing her praises in songs

Back To Basics: Fanmail Fall/Winter 2014 Lookbook

Now here's something worth following. What originally began as a limited range of organic cotton, hemp tees, and sweatshirts evolved into sustainable luxury sportswear brand Fanmail. With flattering cuts, perfect execution, and muted color tones featured in its Fall/Winter collection, each piece serves as a solid anchor to any outfit. Sure, the New York-based brand aims to make an impact, but Fanmail isn't radical; the brand simply wants to shift focus from fashion theatrics to detailed construction and fabrication. "Fanmail clothing is made to be worn, not just looked at on your computer screen," founder Charlie Morris told OC. "It's intended to integrate into the wardrobe you already have rather than necessitate a whole new one."

Like the collection itself, the lookbook came together in a more organic nature. Shot in Dumbo, Brooklyn by photographer Milan Zrnic, the set was built by the Fanmail team and juxtaposes wall-to-wall curtains and warped mirrors against plastic tarp and uncarpeted flooring. "I thought there would be something fun about mixing the artificial and the natural, especially when visual textures in our fabrics and the sets could play off of each other," Morris said. It feels modern yet a work in progress—much like how each piece works with anything you put on.

This week, millions of young people head back to college to pursue things like a four-year liberal arts degree, an enviable internship, and the perfect apple pipe. To celebrate, we commissioned Farley Katz—who, at 29, is at least three generations removed from the next New Yorker cartoonist—to do a BTS strip for us. For more of his recent work, check out this, this, and this.

OPENING CEREMONY: Farley, how did you get started in cartoons?
FARLEY KATZ: I've drawn cartoons since I was seven and realized I could make pictures of my teachers being eaten by dinosaurs.

You are 29. Does that make you feel 1.) young or 2.) old?
Neither. What makes me feel old is that I can remember a time before Internet.

NYFW Survival Cards: Tune Out

It used to be, if you were getting drafted for the military or headed into the wilderness, you would leave with a stack of survival cards—all very necessary if you're weathering harsh, elemental conditions. By no means are we comparing New York Fashion Week to a longish camping expedition, but it can get pretty funky out there. To the rescue: Opening Ceremony's NYFW Survival Cards.

By now, your feet hurt, you have nothing left to wear, and the initial excitement of NYFW has waned. Don't get us wrong—the fashion makes it all worth it. But what started off as innocent people-watching is now really starting to annoy. Just in case you're stuck between a rock and a hard place (aka, the buyer and that blogger that can't seem to gab at an acceptable octave), put on your favorite headphones, turn up the volume, and tune out any mind-numbing statements posed with question-like intonation... at least until the runway lights go down.

Here, our most resilient showgoer opts for a pair of Master & Dynamics Over-Ear Headphones. Bonus: They work just as well in New York as they do in London and Milan.
