Can Denim Be A Lifestyle?

$

Marques’Almeida is more than a brand, it’s a lifestyle. The shredded denim uniform the brand has turned into a larger-than-life craze connotes a specific level of artsy cool you won’t find anywhere else. Aspirational but down-to-earth, intricate but minimal, edgy but approachable: the image Marques creates is a careful balance only their pieces can pull off.

Since Marques’Almeida designers Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida premiered their first mens collection—sold exclusively at OC—in Spring/Summer 2013, the LVMH Prize recipients have successfully brought the Marques lifestyle to denim-loving gentlemen with effortlessly cool tees, button-downs, and jeans. Guys looking to get in on some of the Marques-mania should snatch up their favorite pieces while they still can, because word on the street is those oversized tees make for quite the mini-dress.

The Low-Down On Opening Ceremony’s Fall/Winter 2015 Prints

The look of the prints in Opening Ceremony’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection are interesting, but the stories behind each of them might be even more so. It all began when Humberto Leon spent the day digging through Spike Jonze's legendary archives, listening to his longtime pal reminisce about the memories behind each photo. It was this trip down memory lane that inspired this season’s textiles that blend together shots of notable female rockers, indie starlets, Spike’s skate rat pals, and even a Beastie Boy or three.

The complexity of this season’s prints could potentially leave you in a star-spotting haze. To avoid taking a magnifying glass to your favorite piece in this collection to truly see what’s going on in the print (which we can neither condone nor condemn), Humberto gave us some background behind the prints, complete with his favorite image from each one. Flip through the slideshow above to get the inside scoop.

Gosha Rubchinskiy Gets Physical

Russia has been experiencing a significant sportswear boom recently. So much so, that the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, the market for athletic wear in Russia spiked by approximately 10 percent. This newfound mania surrounding athletic wear in the country seems to have had a significant impact on one Russian designer in particular: streetwear master Gosha Rubchinskiy.

For Fall/Winter 2015, Gosha Reimagined the concept of the instantly recognizable sports logo—think the Nike swoosh, Puma’s leaping cat, etc.—through his signature lens of underground Russian youth subculture. The collection is thoroughly emblazoned, quite literally, with the word “sport” in Mandarin and Cryllic. What is the cheeky logo emblazoned on? Olympic gold-worthy beanies and scarves, athletic-cut tees, and jeans that evoke memories of ‘90s sweatsuits.

Always one to mix in a little luxury with the streetwear aesthetic that made him a household name, Gosha also offers up intricate patchwork jackets in faux suedes and furs (vegans rejoice), as well as an uber-wearable wool coat to keep you active—at least on the fashion front—deep into the colder months.

Calm Before The Storm

Most kids spend an average of two years living in a dorm… I was a completely different story. When I was 14 years old, I went away to boarding school (despite what you’re thinking, yes, my parents love me). After four years of high school and an additional four in college, I had spent a good eight years of my life living under the same roof where at least 20 other females also resided. Some would consider this hell— and at times, it was probably worse than that—but if there is one thing I learned from it all, it’s that I love a good slumber party.

The hardest part about growing up is realizing the fact that adult-friend time often involves dinner reservations or after-work drinks. Why can’t professional women paint their nails, swig liquor from the bottle, and try on each others’ clothes? So as the stress of the impending Fashion Week(s) started to set in, it dawned on me: We should probably rest up (aka pamper ourselves) old school-style before shit hits the fan.

And while my swigging days might’ve turned into more graceful sips, I’ll never pass up an indulgent hangout. If we were going to do this, we had to do this right, so we packed up all the soft knits, latest fine jewelry arrivals,, and excessive amounts of Dr. Jart+ products we could find and proceeded to schedule a manicure appointment with Naomi Nails and head to The Standard, High Line.

It was reassuring to see that there’s still nothing better than a moisturizing face mask, lots of bubbles, and cashmere clothing that doubles as loungewear. Don’t believe me? Well, I think my experience speaks for itself.

Smile! Opening Ceremony And RE:QUEST Present The Class Of 2015

We all remember school picture day and the rush of emotions that took over our pre-pubescent selves when we received that yearbook photo order packet on our desks. There was a whole school year of opportunities ahead of us, and our background decision that hovered behind our frizzy hair and bowl cuts in our school photo would last forever. Would our yearbook photos evoke the DGAF collected cool of Chloë Sevigny and later be featured on Fucking Awesome gear, or would we forever be doomed to braceface nerdom?

Whether you were the popular girly-girl who opted for a light pink gradient, the out-there science fair regular who always chose the background that closest resembled shooting lasers and extraterrestrial travels, or one of those squares whose parents forced them to choose the most neutral print, there was a background that fit every persona. Which is quite similar to the Fall/Winter offerings from the men’s brands available at Opening Ceremony this season.

In our latest Roll Call editorial, we take a trip back to the “most important years of our lives” and cast our favorite male models to star as high school subcultures. And the men’s designs this season help evoke the retro flair that made our freshman-through-senior years (sorta) bearable: Moschino’s jock-approved denim prints get a future reality TV star touch and a head-to-toe Gosha Rubchinskiy get-up makes for the most badass exchange student look since Not Another Teen Movie.

According to our favorite menswear designers, school is now in session this Fall/Winter 2015 season... and we’re more than ready for class.

What OC Editors Are ‘Hair-ing’ At NYFW

$

Fashion Week can sometimes seem like all glitz and glamour—strictly drug-inducing clouds of hairspray, effortless dashes in six inch heels from show to show, and paparazzi capturing every on-point look you can pull out the closet. But in the eyes and experience of an editor (whether for print or digital), the week-long madness can sometimes turn into a hair-pulling and ends-splitting experience.

Anna Wintour’s bob is undoubtedly enviable and Anna Dello Russo’s beach-kissed tresses are perfect for any Instagram filter, but sometimes hair upkeep can seem like more trouble than it’s worth. For this Spring/Summer 2016 New York Fashion Week, we editors at the Opening Ceremony website decided to take the hair debate into our own hands. With a little help from our friends over at Bumble and bumble, our three different hair textures (Manic Panic green tresses, bleach-blonde curls, and romantic waves) were transformed into styles that can last us throughout the madness of this upcoming Fashion Week.

Below, Bumble and bumble stylist Evanie Frausto shares why he chose the hairstyles he did. Plus, read OC’s editorial team’s commentary on choosing an outfit from the hair down.

Evanie Frausto on Chloe Mackey’s beehive updo
When I first met Chloe, I knew we could have fun with her style and take it further. She has a really awesome Manic Panic color that she does at home, so I thought it could be cool to contradict it with a more refined style for NYFW. We gave her a classic beehive and then pulled out sections around the front to give the look an edge.

First, I teased the hair all over while applying Dryspun Finish to give the shape volume and help hold the backcomb. I then pulled hair back from the face, sculpting it into that beehive shape. Once I had the shape, I folded all the hair into a seam down the middle back of the head and used pins to secure the style in place. I pulled two 1” face framing pieces from the center part, flat ironed them, and then molded them into waves around the face. I finished by spritzing our Does It All spray.

Chloe Mackey on her ‘60s bad girl look
To me, beehives evoke images of ‘60s bad girls skipping gym class to smoke under the bleachers. So obviously a leather jacket was a must with this hairstyle. Using the red leopard collar of this MadeMe x Schott Perfecto Jacket, I then reached for Ammerman Schlosberg’s Tail Mini Skirt—which amazingly has a detachable tail that matches the fur of the jacket —and Fleet Ilya’s adorable leather Cat Ear Headband.

Evanie Frausto on Carly Aimi’s sophisticated blow-out
I could tell Carly has a really sophisticated style about her, so I wanted to try something fun that was still elegant. I gave her romantic curls and set them off with a cool cage braid in the back. To start, I added volume to her hair using a cocktail of Bb.Thickening Hairspray and Styling Cream from roots to ends. I curled the hair with a 1 ¼” iron throughout, and then spritzed with Does It All to set the curls

Moses Gauntlett Cheng Embraces The Intern Life

The birth of NYC-based brand Moses Gauntlett Cheng can actually be traced back to another member of the Opening Ceremony designer Fam. After bonding over similar design sensibilities while interning at Eckhaus Latta, the trio—consisting of David Moses, Esther Gauntlett, and Jenny Cheng—set out to create a brand that they describe as being “[...] in response to our city, our families, our stresses and desires.” For Fall/Winter 2015, the brand’s first collection at OC, the trio travelled down the path of tongue-in-cheek embroidery, faux moth holes, and pastel knits.

Ahead of their Spring/Summer 2016 collection debut at VFiles Made Fashion this evening, we caught up with David, Esther, and Jenny to talk questionable high school fashion choices, astrology, and designing a collection around hangovers.

Opening Ceremony prides itself on collaborating with brands that share our focus on discovery and innovation. Which is why it should come as no surprise that we have partnered with Fossil for a special collection of handbags, accessories, and—of course—watches. Set to hit stores in January 2016, the collaboration brings together Opening Ceremony’s inventive design sensibilities with Fossil’s heritage-based vibes and longstanding tenure in the world of watch manufacturing.

You can get a look at two of the four distinct watch styles above, but if you can’t wait until the New Year to see the whole collection, we have a couple of solutions. First, sign up for our mailing list to ensure that you’ll be the first to hear of any updates with the collaboration, then make sure to keep your eyes peeled during our Spring/Summer 2016 runway show for a potential sneak peek on both Opening Ceremony’s and Fossil’s Twitters and Instagrams.

Book A One-Way Trip To J.W. Anderson’s Retrofuture

The warm, technicolor vibes present in J.W. Anderson’s Fall/Winter 2015 men’s and women’s collections seemed fit to transfer on to the walls that surround it. Taking from the London-based designer’s inspiration for this season—which ranges from the idea of pataphysics to the classic works of science fiction writers George Orwell and Ray Bradbury—Anderson’s path of retrofuturism is transferred on to the front of Opening Ceremony NY’s 33 Howard Street space. Dashes of red hues and mustard and cream colors dance across the installation, seemingly mimicking the designs in the Abstract Printed Sweatshirt. Colorblocked sections of each wall space also carry over from the shapely distinctions present in each piece of clothing in Anderson’s latest collections.

Great Food For An Even Greater Cause

Last night, Carol and I had the pleasure of hosting a very special dinner at Mission Chinese Food. A 13-course meal from a personalized menu concocted by executive chef Angela Dimayuga, with proceeds from the event going to one of our favorite nonprofits, Edible Schoolyard NYC (a nonprofit that provides fresh produce to low-income families and children). Great food for an even greater cause.

Earlier this summer, Angela and I were kicking back in upstate New York, brainstorming ideas for a collaboration (read: party), initially thinking to co-host an event as DJs. Eventually, that idea evolved into a one-night-only charity dinner that would serve nostalgic dishes inspired by our childhood favorite treats. For me, that was my mother’s fried chicken, which appeared on last night’s menu as Hainanese-style Fried Chicken.

A few highlights from the menu: we savored Lumpia Shanghai Eggrolls and enjoyed masa-battered Sweet and Sour Pork, and ended the night on Taiwanese Shaved Milk Ice, along with traditional hot tea service. Sating ourselves on Angela’s wonderful Pan-Asian creations (which she describes as “nostalgic fusion” and more simply, “a very American vision of Asian food”) was the perfect way to kick-off the frenzy of NYFW.

And speaking of Fashion Week, keep a lookout for the greenery incorporated in our Spring/Summer 2016 show this Sunday! Because in addition to donating proceeds from our dinner, Opening Ceremony will also be donating the trees and plants from the runway in Edible Schoolyard NYC’s organic garden. We worked with Edible Schoolyard NYC to pick out plants that would best suit our vision and the edible greenhouse garden. You could call it a fruitful effort—just our way of paying it forward.

Adam Selman’s Spring/Summer 2016 Collection Still Caters To The Ladies

Season after season, Adam Selman makes is very clear that he knows what a girl wants. Case in point: his latest Spring/Summer 2016 collection, which was presented during New York Fashion Week last night. Female models strutted down the runway in an array of flowery multi-layered sheer dresses, oversized bags, and (our personal favorite part of the show) Converse espadrilles.

While the air of femininity is always present at Adam’s shows, another factor is also always present: front row girl, OC’s Michelle Salem. Decked out in pieces from Adam Selman’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection, Michelle caught up with the designer after the show to talk inspiration and Fashion Week (burger) essentials.

Shop all Adam Selman here

MICHELLE SALEM: Who would you say the “Adam Selman girl” is?
ADAM SELMAN: I’m not really into defining the Adam Selman girl, I think they’re eclectic and I’m really into that. There are pieces in my collection that a 60-year-old woman can wear and that a 19-year-old girl can wear.

What would you say your Fashion Week essentials are? I’m sure that you’re running around and working a lot.
Burgers!
Oh my God, I love burgers. I’m obsessed with burgers, by the way.
Yeah, and I also try to sleep as much as possible.

Now that the show is finally over, what are you going to do? Are you going to party or sleep?
AS: I think I’m going to get a sensible dinner, then we’ll see what happens.

What’s your advice for any aspiring designer?
Say yes to everything...even patternmaking. Create your own path. Even if it is hard, you have to say yes to it, even if it’s not the most exciting thing in the world. You just have to do it.

NYC’s Best Korean Beauty Shops

$

I’ve always been fascinated with finding new ways to improve and maintain healthy skin, so whenever I travel to Seoul for work or family visits, my to-do list begins with stocking up on new products. Duty-free shopping in Korea is like heaven for beauty products; I can get all of my favorites at one stop tax-free or discounted. Don’t hate, I also make sure to pick up gifts for my co-workers and friends back in the States to share the love!

Korean beauty regimens are also fascinating! We Korean women have certain beliefs by mother’s hand down skincare routine/ beauty tips growing up or my friends’ word of mouth or Get It Beauty, a trusted beauty source that we religiously follow. But for those of you who might not have access to buy these products from Korea, I’m helping you out with a guide of the best Korean beauty shops in New York City.

Top-of-the-line beauty products... no passport necessary.

The Mask Bar

Overview
I dismissed The Mask Bar at first, thinking they only carried masks. But this new gem of a store offers much more than that. The shop is small, but don’t let the size fool you. You can get hard-to-find products such as IOPE Air Cushion SPF 15 by Amore Pacific and the Sulwhasoo Skin Care Set by Amore Pacific.

Customer Service
Two helpful sales ladies will walk you through each product—from The Mask Bar’s face masks to their in-house Hyaluronic Acid products. I trusted their recommendations and I would definitely go back for more. It’s now my new local go-to shop for Korean beauty products!

My Picks
Black Sugar Cleansing Oil by Skin Food: This is the best cleansing oil I’ve ever used. It’s very mild on your skin and removes makeup gently—even waterproof mascara.

The Black Sugar Mask Wash Off by Skin Food: This Skin Food mask is the only scrub type mask I use for my sensitive skin. It exfoliates and moisturizes while brightening the skin tone. Plus, it leaves your skin feeling smooth and soft for days. Can’t be mad at that.

Skylake Skincare

Overview
It’s a small space, but enough to fit many thoughtful product offerings, including the best offers of traditional Eastern herbal medicine-focused beauty products as well as Skylake Skincare in-house products. It’s a one-stop-beauty-shop for quick ingredient-based finds! This shop also has exclusive products like Facial Masks by Leaders, Isa Knox X2D2 Wrinkle A440 Serum by LG, Hera UV Mist Cushion Compact by Amore Pacific, Dangi Shampoo, Age 20’s Essence Cover Fact Foundation, and Clio Eyeliner.

Customer Service
The sales reps are very friendly and equipped with lots of in-depth product knowledge. They will take their time going through all of the products to find the ideal item for your skin type. I always leave the store feeling taken care of.

My Picks
Oriental Herb Relax Toner by SkyLake: This is a great mist! It helps to revitalize your skin and make it feel fresh. It keeps your skin hydrated at work in the middle of the day and it’s also a wake-up effect after a food coma.

Leaders Facial Masks: These are some of the best Korean facial mask out there and they’re exclusively sold at the Skylake. I was so stoked to see this mask. It’s developed by dermatologists based on treatments used in their clinic and Korean celebrities swear by this!
