'Rama Caída' at the Argentine Consulate

This year, we at OC are in pursuit of All things argentinean, so it only made complete sense to whip by the Consulate of Argentina for its new group exhibition, Rama Caída. The show's name means "fallen branch" in Spanish, and is also a Selena song as well as the name of a place in Argentina. Which potential allusion does the show’s title activate? Visit the exhibition to decide for yourself!

Put together by Rosario Güiraldes and Rafael Bueno, Rama Caída is the first group show of 2012 for the Argentinan curatorial project Peña, and features works by a number of the country's artists—Lorenzo Bueno, Maximiliano Ferro, Julián Gatto, Valeria Poggio, Nicolás Sarmiento, Geraldine Schwindt, Santiago Villanueva, and the curator, Rosario Güiraldes. A snapshot of the youth art scene in Argentina, the gallery holds an assortment of photographs, sculptures, drawings, paintings, as well as mixed media pieces (including a series of photographs on a T-shirt).

Ain't No Party Like an Art Party: Whitney Biennial 2012

“Um… maybe we should go check out the art?” was the question most often heard at Tuesday night’s opening of the 2012 Whitney Biennial. And not because the art was anything less than spectacular, but rather how hard it was to pull yourself away from the all-star crowd, the hors d’oeuvres, and of course, the bar—needless to say, the party was poppin’!

As for the art, from Joanna Mailowska's deer sculpture, K8 Hardy’s hair weave, to Nick Mauss’ accurately sized room rendering (complete with Ellsworth Kelly lithograph), it was worth ditching the crowd to catch a glimpse of it all. Check out some of my favorite pieces from the show.

Opens today through May 27th, 2012.

Blowing in the Wind: Dan Colen at Karma

Dan Colen whipped up a whirlwind of activity last night with pieces from his "Blowing in the Wind" series. The walls of Karma, the versatile bookstore-meets-art gallery, were littered with Colen's works of trash-turned-art. Drizzled in vibrant colors and hung as if in mid-flight, these pieces evoke the disposable and the transient. Guests could also browse many of Colen's published projects, which range from photography to coloring books. Whether you came for the gathering or the art, this was the only party of the night to have beer cans both on and off the gallery wall.

OC x PFW: Carven FW12

Thanks to the much-loved Guillaume Henry, Carven has become our go-to designer for sweetly parisienne wardrobe basics. Yesterday's show at the Cordeliers convent took the Carven girl on a trip to a remembered wonderland, with rich shades of old master paintings and a bright print inspired by Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights. New Carven classics like high-waisted shorts, flirty party dresses, and ladylike coats were all in full effect, along with surprises like bouncing epaulettes and laser-cut lace pieces. There is an innocence to everything Guillaume does, including last night's prom-like afterparty, where guests danced amidst confetti and balloons spelling out CARVEN. See our favorite looks to the left!

Caroline in the Country: Jacquemus SS12

Homey linen, boxy cuts, and colors that look perfect with bare legs. Jacquemus’ latest collection of airy pleated dresses, “Le Chenil” (the kennel), is about country comforts and taking the dogs out. In his second outing at OC, young Parisian designer Simon Porte Jacquemus seals his place in our hearts with his unique approach to truly timeless clothing. Swinging long-sleeved dresses in simple block colors feel both blissfully authentic and refreshingly new.

This season, the designer has found his perfect poster girl in iconic French model Caroline de Maigret. Fresh of face, long of bang, and full of  toothy smiles, she's the ultimate embodiment of all things Jacquemus. Watch her groom her Pomeranian in the video lookbook below and read my Q & A with Simon.

Shop all Jacquemus here.

Alice Newell-Hanson: How did you come about working with Caroline?
Simon Porte Jacquemus: I saw her at the Margiela show, and I fell in love. She looks like my mother, she has this very special kind of beauty, true and simple at the same time. I can't even describe it!

ANH: How would you sum up the spirit of Le Chenil?
SPJ: I wanted the dresses to look very old, like your grandmother's dresses. They're clothes with a story, so you might not even think that they're new pieces.

ANH: I love the film! Where was it shot?
SPJ: In the countryside, one hour from Paris.

ANH: What was the most memorable part of shooting it?
SPJ: When Caroline tried to run after her dogs in her muddy boots.

ANH: Did you have dogs growing up?
SPJ: My only dog was Polux, he wasn't any special breed, but when I lost him I decided to never get another dog, so I'd never feel what my little nine-years-old's heart felt!

Earthworm Jim, Dinosaurs, Catdog, Samurai Pizza Cats, and Muppet Babies all have a special place in my heart, but no other program fried as many of my tween brain cells as Daria did. Thanks to this show, the best parts of my school life were spent smack-bang in front of the TV, still in my itchy uniform, with a bowl of cereal in my lap, and a big, dumb smile on my face. Sandi, Stacy, Quinn, Tiffany, Trent, Jane, Brittany, Mr. DeMartino, and the Three J’s, where ARE you guys? I need you in my sick, sad world! On the eve of the show’s anniversary, we pay tribute to Daria.

New (Wave) Designer Lucio Castro

$

This is Lucio Castro's debut collection, not just at OC, but full stop. And the list of reasons why it's special goes on... For one, the designer was born in Argentina, which also happens to be OC's country of the year. Two, everything is ethically produced: coconut buttons are made in India, Lucio sources organic cotton from Japan, and the line is sewn in small factories in Sri Lanka. And then there are the pieces themselves: poppy houndstooth sweaters, crewnecks with color swatch sleeves, and flecked neon ties suggest the precision and clever eye of a filmmaker (just one of Lucio's many other gigs, which have included medical student, screenwriter, and Marc Jacobs menswear designer).

So it makes sense that for his first collection Lucio looked to French filmmaker and educator Fernard Deligny, whose work on teenage outcasts inspired The 400 Blows. Drawing on Truffaut and a cast of young French delinquents, the collection is full of mid-century shapes and boyish appeal. Keep scrolling for pictures and collages from Lucio's lookbook, and get a sneak peek of his Fall/Winter 2012 collection behind the scenes at the OC showroom.

OC x PFW: Delfina Delettrez FW12

Strips of legendary Carrera marble, classic columns, and miniature mosaics conveyed the Roman inspiration behind Delfina Delettrez's fall collection, presented at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Bracelets with alternating stripes of colored marble in muted tones and elaborate necklaces were displayed on harlequin-painted mannequins. Delfina greeted everyone with her usual smile, and we chatted about her collaboration with Carol and Humberto for the latest Kenzo collection (more on that soon!). Within the Eternal City theme was plenty of Miss D.'s customary whimsy: Juliana showed me a tiny lipstick case lined with mirrors. As usual, we can't wait to add these tiny wonders to our jewelry boxes.

Having only been at the head of Mugler for a year now, Nicola Formichetti is already well in line with the brand’s iconic aesthetic. For Fall/Winter 2012, Nicola, along with womenswear designer Sébastien Peigné, revisited many of the striking silhouettes of Thierry Mugler’s collections from the early 90s. The color palette remained within the self-imposed peripheries of black, white, and red, which combined with the designers’ imaginative use of fringing, cut-out bodices, distorted prints, and fox fur trimmings made for a dramatic collection.

OC x PFW: Kenzo FW12

Carol and Humberto staged another unforgettable fashion moment for Kenzo's Fall/Winter 2012 show. Friends and family were in full effect to witness fifty models descend five floors of escalators in a rainbow-hued science university in the 5th arrondissement. On the 'lavender' floor, the Leon and Lim families, along with the other guests, munched on specially-made Magnolia for Kenzo cupcakes while Carol and Humberto made last-minute adjustments backstage. Set to a Nguzunguzu track, the show was big in the best way, with an army of Kenzo girls marching through the space, starting with an incredible Karlie Kloss in an embroidered logo sweatshirt and tweed mini-suit.

Taking their inspiration from the world of interiors and the experience of moving between rooms, the looks ranged from trellis-patterned silk gowns to belted outerwear to fitted dresses in silk shantung. Delfina Delettrez collaborated with the house on a collection of jewelry with metal-encased walnuts and citrus wedges, and legendary Almodóvar art director Juan Gatti contributed fruit prints. After the show, the whole gang celebrated at the Favela Chic, with new Kenzo fans Diddy and Cassie joining Robyn in the DJ booth. Epic from beginning to end!

OC chouchoute Olympia Le-Tan launched her eponymous clothing collection on Saturday with a typically OLT wink: Bettie Page look-alikes stripped down while dancing to girl groups and Biggie in the kitchen of the Musée Nissim de Camondo (watch a snippet in our video below). Entitled "Power, Corruption, and Lies," the 50s-inspired line featured nip-waisted dresses in stripes and plaid. Paired with little sweaters, they were the perfect complements to her adored embroidered clutches. New book handbags (This Side of Paradise, Lucien Leuwen), were strewn on Louis-the-Something armchairs in the rooms upstairs. With cakes, champagne, lovely pieces, and lots of friends, Olympia's presentations are always a highlight on the OC calendar.

Brochella 2012: SSION at the Highline Ballroom

Remember high school, when the jocks were on top of the world? They were all part of a team and threw the best keggers. Well New York City can be kind of like high school, except the weirdos run the show.

This past Friday, the varsity freaks put on their heels for Brochella 2012 at the Highline Ballroom. Featuring half a dozen acts of gender-bending, mic-dominating madness, the concert rocked on for hours with acts like House of LaDosha, Mykki Blanco, and Alexis Penney. Anticipation built until late in the early morning when Kansan freak-pop legends SSION finally took the stage. Accompanied by angelic vocalists and beefy dancers, frontman Cody Critcheloe took the audience on a choreographed trip to punk heaven. There's a special positivity that only good pop can create, and it was unmistakably in the air as the dance floor went wild and Cody's friends and fellow performers paraded the stage in a spirit of comradery. There was no shortage of talent earlier in the night, but SSION's performance was flawlessly executed and showed that they've perfected their wonderful aesthetic of gay-club-on-a-whole-lotta-acid. VIVA SSION! I caught up with Cody right after the show.

John Tuite: Fill in the blanks:
My name is Cody Critcheloe and I am a very talented donkey with anarchist tendencies, when the lighting is right. My band SSION is the best thing ever, and our music is like melted butter with sugar at the bottom.

JT: What was the best moment of Brochella 2012?
CC: Kicking everyone out of the dressing room for smoking and then lighting up a big fat joint. I didn't actually smoke it, but I lit it up then passed it around to all my sisters in crime. There were some really good chips backstage and my friend brought me a cookie for after the show. But let’s not forget how incredible the audience was! They stuck it out till like 4am. AND someone in the front started crying during the song "Weird Years"—maybe it was a comedown? There were just too many good times. All my favorite performers on one stage.

JT: DISmagazine recently said that “SSION is 2012”who else is set to rule "your" year? Do you have any predictions?
CC: Actually, I am sort of psychic. But I can't really say anything 'cuz I don't know. I think God is really chilling in 2012... can you feel it?

JT: You’ve been working with tons of really talented people lately. If you could collaborate with any historical figures, who would you pick and what would you do together?
CC: I still really want Tanya Harding to be in one of my music videos. Kim Gordon as well… I'm really not much of a collaborator. I want very specific things.

JT: What food are you?
CC: Something very sweet.

JT: Who were your role models growing up?
CC: Very loud women.

JT: Any advice for your fans?
CC: Meditate.

It's Paris Fashion Week and we’re nearly as excited to find out what’s playing during the shows as we are to see what’s on the catwalks. We asked some OC friends to hit us with their Fall/Winter 2012 show soundtracks.

I’ve never heard any of these songs and that makes a lot of sense, considering I've also never seen anything like the FW12 Bernhard Willhelm collection. He never ceases to surprise and delight! Check out the tracklist below.

In a realm usually occupied by long johns, Moon Boots, and fleece, Tsumori Chisato has taken the après-ski look and made it darling for Fall/Winter 2012. The designer fell deep into the winter wonderland that is her imagination to create heeled snow boots, digital prints of snow, and appliqués of snowmen and ski poles. On top of her flouncy skirts, kooky eyewear, and wide-leg pant staples, Tsumori added a flurry of little surprises, like feather trimmings and Fair Isle sweaters that exchanged knitted snowflakes for abominable snowmen!

Center Stage: Bilitis Dix-Sept Ans SS12

Getting dressed when you were five was awesome because you knew that, if you wanted, you could wear a ballerina outfit down the street and no one would bat an eyelid. Now, not so much. But Bilitis Dix-Sept Ans is giving us something better. The Japanese label, new to OC this season, makes (almost) grown-up versions of our perfect fantasy ballerina outfits. Puff-sleeve dresses with full pin-tucked skirts, cross-over blouses, and tulle ballerina skirts are taken out of the sickly pinks of beginners class and into soft grey, black, and white.

Designers Yuko Seshimo and George Hoshi dreamed up the line around Bilitis, an imaginary 17-year-old French girl. And her ghostly teenage sprit, combined with Yuko and George's antique lace trims, gives the collection all the guileless, slightly eerie, charm of, well, an imaginary French girl.
