In the bustle before NYFW, we dispatched cameras to a handful of OC designers. The aim: to see how many snacks, coffee runs, and late-night pizzas go into making a collection. So now that we've seen what came down the catwalks, it's time to take a peek behind the scenes!
Rachel Comey HQ was a sea of shoes in the lead-up to Spring/Summer 2013. As could be expected from the queen of clogs, Rachel sent us a film filled with striped sandals and metallic platforms. Check out the silvery stunners that graced last week's runway, as well as the team snack table, the final show line-up, and our very favorite piece from the collection below.
OC: Hi Rachel. Congratulations, you did it! Can you please describe your spring collection?
Rachel Comey: Stretchy, beaded, matelassé, one-pieces, wet, punched, printed, draped ruffles, event-y, beachy, worky, handy, mirrored, bound, plain, dense flowers, found landscape images, camouflage, naughty, utilitarian, heavy georgette, bouncy scuba, strapped, red.
OC: Piece you'll be wearing most next spring?
RC: Swimwear!
OC: We loved the live band. Who are they?
RC: This season we worked with the brilliant Rupert Clervaux, a composer and drummer, who also performed at our Spring/Summer 2009 show. He likes a conceptual or instrumental challenge—a drum and a piano duel, for example. This year was similarly inspired, pairing instruments and sounds that aren't typical paired together (something we do with our design process as well): autoharp, steel pan drums, and piano.
OC: What kept you going this week?
RC: Everyone we work with. Our incredible staff in the studio as well as the pattern-makers, sewers, cutters, etc. They're all so inspired and hardworking. It's what keeps me going. And seeing light at the end of the tunnel.
OC: How are you planning to cool off?
RC: Check into a hospital and have a baby.
