Philanthropist Frances Lasker Brody is famous for second-guessing Matisse; the wealthy Californian asked the artist to reconsider a mosaic he was creating for her Los Angeles home. Last night, exactly 60 years after Frances commissioned the piece, its colorful fronds reappeared in Ostwald Helgason's spring presentation, on a matching short suit and a printed silk shift. In fact, the collection's Hollywood pinks, A-line dresses, and cropped pants all took a leaf out of Mrs. Brody's book, referencing her equally famous wardrobe.
But retro this wasn't. Susanne Ostwald and Ingvar Helgason continued to build on their unique kind of cool-girl athleticism—underpinnned as ever by button-downs and topped with killer knits. This season, their signature flared skirts partnered with graphic animal prints and their ruffle-hem dresses starred large pleated pockets. Sealing the safari feel, a cropped T-shirt came printed with a crocodile drawn by Susanne herself. Surely even Frances Brody would have to have adored that?
