Adam Green's 'Houseface' at The Hole

The only place you'll find Garfield, Elmo, and Big Bird hanging out with the likes of Mondrian and Gaudí this week is at my favorite downtown art haunt––The Hole. Currently on view is an end-of-summer exhibition by artist and musician Adam Green (one half of the Moldy Peaches) titled Houseface. The opening last week felt like I'd stumbled into a wonderland of childhood nostalgia, walking around under the watchful eyes of Green's most cherished cartoon characters.

All three galleries of The Hole are filled with playful paintings and sculptures that seek to reconstruct our attachment to cartoon imagery. The simple architectural compositions evoke the same sense of whimsy as the figures did once upon a Saturday morning cartoon binge. Who says cartoons are just for kids?

It's easy to associate Green's paintings with that of De Stijl and Mondrian, but he is responding to his own associations with the work of such expressionists by re-sourcing the roots of inspiration back to our childhood attachments and sentimentality. Also on view in Houseface is Green's first cinematic splash and full-length film, The Wrong Ferrari, which is played on loop! At 70 minutes long (and shot an entirely on an iPhone), it documents life on the road, turning 30, abusing ketamine, and features his pals Macaulay Culkin, Alia Shawkat, and Devendra Banhart.

Houseface is up through August 25th.
