Currently hanging on the walls of GAVIN BROWN’S ENTERPRISE are the fruits of Akira Horikawa’s 1000 DRAWING PROJECT. The pocket-sized drawings are interpretations of his dreams and observations, gathered over a five-year period. The show comes via Jonathan Horowitz, one of the gallery's artists. Horowitz needed an assistant and hired Horikawa based on his expert life-drawing skills. It was later that he discovered Horikawa’s project, by way of his TUMBLR.
Awkward couples, outrageously endowed porn stars, strangers in dive bars, beautiful girls, and grotesque capitalist caricatures appear in warped proportions, alongside dancing skeletons, crows, cats, and all manner of monsters. And it isn't over yet. Until the end of the show, Horikawa will be adding to the collection—when I was there last Wednesday, he was at drawing number 969. It's a room of contradictions: sensitive, sinister, morbid, and amusing all at once.
