La Lucha, a luchador (wrestler, for those unacquainted with español)-themed Mexican joint in the East Village doesn't pull any punches. I stopped in on a rainy Tuesday just in time for the taco lunch special, and had the restaurant all to myself. The tortillas of my Atlantis shrimp tacos had a slight crunch––the kind that reminds you why all of the other soggy tacos out there just aren't the real deal. And even with my avowed aversion for spicy food, the tacos had just the right amount of kick. With their generous helping of juicy grilled shrimp on top, they're a real contender.
The special comes with a side of flavorful refried beans and an agua fresca (or fresh drink). I opted for the agua fresca de jamaica, a tart and refreshing hibiscus drink that does a job on the palate. La Lucha is a place that takes a theme seriously. The walls are plastered with colorful ads for Mexican wrestling matches past, and punchy little luchador action figures look down from the walls––disgruntled, but obviously just jealous that they don't have a seat of their own. The check comes inside of a mini wrestling ring. Totaling $7.62, who knew fighting could taste so good?
