Meet Dempsey, our Chloë Sevigny for OC model that Chloë also hand-picked for her runway show––and it's easy to see why. This Australian ultra-babe has been spotted on the runways of Louis Vuitton, Viktor & Rolf, Dries van Noten, Marc Jacobs, Ann Demeulemeester, Rick Owens... You name it, she's walked it. Get to know more about her here!
Name: Dempsey Stewart
Your neighborhood (in NY): I've been jumping from country to country a lot, so whenever I'm in New York I stay in Wilhelmina's model flat, situated in Midtown. It's really close to everything and makes it easy to get from A to B, but I really like the vibe of the East Village. I am more of an arty sort of person, so if I ever get a flat in New York I would try to look around there.
Hometown: I grew up in Perth, Western Australia, which is a five-minute walk from the Indian Ocean. Recently, my family moved to North Tasmania, Australia, where we have a green and woody half-acre block right on the river.
Astrological sign: Leo, but I'm on the cusp of Cancer. I seem to be a mix of both.
What is something about you that no one would expect? I've won a few competitions in Australia for designing and making clothes––it's my passion. I also have a black belt in Taekwondo.
What was the easiest or hardest thing about modeling for Opening Ceremony? The easiest thing was meeting and hanging out with amazing, inspiring, lovely people and being around the garments all day. The hardest was leaving it behind after I finished!
When I'm not modeling I'm _____: Taking photos, knitting, or drawing designs. I love sewing, too. I would love to be able to bring my sewing machine with me wherever I go. It's just not easy when you're traveling so frequently!
Where's the coolest or strangest place you've ever been to for a photo shoot? Iceland! I think it must be Earth's own solution to the Moon! Madness! I could not stop taking photos.
Essential photo shoot song? "R.E.S.P.E.C.T."
Most prized possessions? My beautiful friends and family.
Best gift you’ve ever given? I do tend to go a little crazy with gifts, haha. I always try to do something unexpected. When I was about 14, my 12-year-old cousin, Hazel, didn't have a phone yet. It was Christmas and I decided I would buy her the same "awesome" 50-dollar flip phone that I had. So I packaged it up in a box inside a box, inside another box, inside a giant box filled rubbish so she would be super happy and surprised! I don't think she quite knew what to say.
Best gift you’ve ever received? My beautiful sister Lily-Lola.
What is something that everyone should try at least once? Traveling. Even better, not as a typical tourist.
If you weren't a model, what would you be doing? Continuing to intern with fashion designers in Australia, I guess.
What's the most played song on your iPod? Probably at the moment there are three... "Rich Girls" by the Virgins, The Clash vs. The Bloody Beetroots' "Should I Stay or Should I Go", and Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'".
Favorite place to go to escape the city: My mum's house and our best friend Jan's house in Tasmania! It's so beautiful there. So fresh,
