What better way to spend a rainy afternoon than puddle-jumping from gallery to gallery in Chelsea? Yesterday's water-wading adventures brought me to the Andrea Rosen Gallery, where the current group show addresses the differences between three-dimensional space and two-dimensional representation, collapsing the boundaries between the real and the imaginary.
The exhibition's roster features six different artists––OC friends Lizzi Bougatsos and Lizzie Fitch, as well as Michael DeLucia, David Gilbert, Robert Overby, and Andra Ursuta––and the works on display are just as diverse. Postcards scattered on the floor throughout the gallery make up one work, while a found poster-turned-sculpture incorporates formal technique with its handmade quality.
But unlike a lot of the art we see today, the featured work is full of ideas that go beyond the materials used. The show's curation also allows for an interesting dialogue to take place between the pieces––like how a sculpture of a unibrowed woman in a gyros ad brings out the grain in the wood photograph that it shares a room with. Or maybe you have to see to believe it. The show will be up until August 31st, don't miss your chance to go!
