Avid YouTubers might know Jayson Musson from the LOL-inducing vlog ART THOUGHTZ, in which a snapback-sporting Musson takes jabs at the art world's pretense using the monicker Hennesy Youngman. His persona's name––which references Henny "the king of one-liners" Youngman and Hennessy, the drank of choice for many rappers––best sums up Musson's M.O. of high art vernacular meets hip-hop lingo.
But merely a YouTube sensation Musson is not. A trained artist, he works with a variety of mediums, including painting and photography. In Halcyon Days, his show that opened on Wednesday at Salon 94, the main material is Coogi sweaters, the colorful knitwear that rappers like Biggie and Riff Raff were partial to. Musson spent about eight months acquiring the sweaters before pulling them apart and stretching them onto his canvases. The resulting hip-hop-meets-Pollock pieces are definitely worth checking out.
Through August 17, 2012.
