When I see silver platters, my mind usually goes to fine food––things like wild boar terrine, caviar, or any food that pretty much tastes the way it sounds. However, at Noho's Mile End, an off-shoot of the popular Boerum Hill delicatessen of the same name, my Hoyt dog deserved the silver platter (okay, metal tray) it was served on as much as any 5-star dish.
Here, the mushy hot dog bun of yesteryear has been replaced with perfectly toasted, poppy-covered bread, and the beef has that smoky flavor of backyard family BBQs. All of the dog's components are made in-house, so even the tangy sauerkraut topping is fresh, with the crunch of freshly chopped cabbage that's enough to keep anyone's hands off the ketchup and mustard. At $7.62, it's pricier than the average streetcorner hot dog, but it's certainly worth the extra dollars.
