Mother of all nail art Naomi Yasuda has worked with the likes of Madonna, Alicia Keys, Steven Tyler, and now, Carol Lim! Hailing from Japan, Naomi has been werkin it out in Williamsburg at Hello Beautiful salon for some years now. So what kind of manicure does Carol need? A Kenzo manicure, obvs! GT: What was the first fancy manicure you did, and who was it for?

Gillian Tozer: How long have you been doing nails for?
Naomi Yasuda: I've been doing nails professionally for 10 years. I always liked doing my own nails and then I started doing the nails of my sisters and friends. I used to bring nail polish to my school and do my friends' nails on our lunch breaks!

GT: What was the first fancy manicure you did, and who was it for?
NY: My first celebrity client was Keri Hilson in 2008, for The Source magazine. I gave her neon pink leopard-print nails with diamantes.

GT: What is your most memorable nail design?
NY: I worked with Barneys for the Lady Gaga pop-up shop. I created four different press-on nail tips and two kinds of Minx nails. I handmade 1,500 nail tips! It was so much work, but they are the most unique and crazy nails I've done yet!

GT: And your most memorable clients?
NY: I did Madonna's nails for her Super Bowl performance in 2012! Words cannot express how excited I was! I still can't believe it! I also did Alicia Keys' nails for her Element of Freedom album cover. It was a long day, but every look came out great and I really loved the gemstone, bindi-style nail that I did for her. Steven Tyler was fun too! I did his nails for an Aerosmith concert. He invited me to his concert at Jones Beach State Park, NY, when I saw his nails on the big screen I almost cried! He is one of the most amazing guys I have ever met!

GT: What are five essentials you need when doing nails?
NY: First of all, as a creator, imagination is very important; I try to have an antenna out for new design ideas every day, as I get inspiration from everywhere. I also have so many types of clients that my style has to adapt to their preference, but I do like to add my own flavor! And, as with anything practice makes perfect!
