For Fall/Winter 2011, the Proenza Schouler boys went West! I was all over this collection quicker than you could yell "road trip!" I needed to know exactly what (or where) had inspired their Navajo prints and eye-popping palette of tangerine, indigo, and turquoise. Jack and Lazaro kindly agreed to share some of their pictures from Santa Fe and beyond, and all I can say is they don't look like any holiday snaps I've ever taken. Crystalline lakes, cornflower skies, and otherworldly rock formations show exactly why this is such a breathtaking collection.
"The colors of the desert and the general feeling of the place were incredibly inspiring to us," Jack and Lazaro explain. T-shirts striped with ocher and deep blue draw on wild desert panoramas but with "something a little psychedelic thrown into the mix." Zigzags and patterned jacquard come from native blankets and textiles but, because this is Proenza, "the whole thing was rung through computers and digitized, a sort of modernization of an American classic." Even before I fell in love with the towering ponyhair shoes in acid-meets-autumn-leaf colors, I knew this was a trip I wanted to take.
