iO Tillett Wright brought her ongoing Self Evident Truths project to The Hole on Tuesday, covering the space with 1,675 uncompromising black-and-white portraits of individuals who identify as "ANYTHING other than straight." The exhibit looked like a giant Guess Who? board, bringing the crowd face-to-face with a spectrum of people including farmers, policemen, teens, and mothers, as if to say, "Duh, America. Anyone can be gay."
Self Evident Truths avoids heavy-handed politics in favor of a humanizing approach, inviting viewers to identify with its diverse subjects and daring anyone to refuse them equality. “We look just like you, your mother, your brother, or the coworker sitting right next to you,” says Tillett Wright about the faces in her work. The evening's performers added to the celebratory tone, with infectious live sets from Caveman and Bianca Casady of CocoRosie (an outspoken queer activist in her own right), while DJ Venus X held it down on the 1s and 2s.
