'ILLUME-MINE': Kristin Baker at Suzanne Geiss

Kristin Baker's new exhibition of acrylics at The Suzanne Geiss Company explores the relationship between light, paint, and space. Her works display a striking tonal range, using overlapping planes and fluid washes of color to evoke depth. The title of the exhibit, ILLUME-MINE, hints at the way light appears to emerge from within these paintings—their contents seem less like blocks of color in a two-dimensional field than translucent membranes layered in space, refracting internal luminescence. A smudged handprint in the corner of one work reinforces the viewer's sense of exteriority, as if perceiving a glowing landscape through sheets of ice.

Through June 23, 2012.
