Josiah McElheny at Andrea Rosen Gallery

Josiah McElheny's show Some thoughts about the abstract body, currently up at Andrea Rosen Gallery, is a cerebral and historical study of, you guessed it. The body. Anthropomorphic forms, unsurprisingly, dominate the show and take shape in standing sculptures (as well as in the bottomless vase-like glass pieces that populate their vitrines), transparent wall works, and mirrored structures that can be worn like sandwich boards.

The artist has a history of entering into dialogue with fashion as an exteriorized cultural expression. In 1999 and 2000, he exhibited a series themed on Christian Dior; in 2001 he presented participants in his work The Metal Party with metallic costumes. By drawing attention to familiar molds of the body as we know it, it seems that McElheny is probing our rigid physical notions and their boundaries. The exhibition is certainly worth the gander (and the subsequent meditative spell).
