Elaine Sturtevant has been replicating Warhols, Stellas, and Duchamps for decades. But don't call her a copycat. The artist (who simply goes by her last name) explains it as prodding the visible surface of art to reveal its understructure, because isn't everything a copy of something anyway? You can agree or you can disagree. But in Rock & Rap c Simulacra, her new show at Gavin Brown's, the artist she seems to be replicating the most is none other than herself.
In her series of looped video clips (which include animals in action, the Taco Bell chihuahua, Betty Boop, a tango dancing couple, and some of her previous works sprinkled in between), the artist challenges the viewer to a referential exercise. But its manic repetition of sound and image can drive a person insane, and the works cast a dark light on the cybernetics of the digital age. What is the nature of the images we are bombarded with? Is information knowledge? Whichever mold we are living in, Sturtevant is doing her best to disrupt and displace it.
