Free Range is a Los Angeles farmer's market restaurant with a menu focused on free-range poultry, eggs, and all-organic vegetables and herbs. The little Melrose Place booth is part bakeshop, part sandwich shop, and beverage house (it even brews its own sodas, carbonates its own water, and makes its own syrup). Free Range’s goal is to turn the natural beauty and ‘specialty item’ feel of the farmer’s market into a dining experience. It is an ode to craft.
At Free Range, the savory and sweet offerings include fresh biscuits, tarts, and the delightful caramel slice (a shortbread sable with shaved coconut, caramel, and a chocolate garnish). They also offer a line of tarts and pastries inspired by farmer's markets around the world. For this, Partner chef Trisha Greentree draws from her past in Australia, where the outdoor markets are busy and a well-known pastime.
I went with the $9 specialty Fried Chicken Sandwich. Featured on a sweet Portuguese bun with home-pickled garnishes, it takes on American soul with techniques and flavors of various regions. It's good street food with quality ingredients. It's a meal that is fast without compromising attention to flavor and detail. It is comforting and on-the-go, but profound and refined.
I was more than satisfied crunching pieces of candied lavender at the bottom of my fresh organic ginger ale to finish off my tasteful experience.

"If we are not making it, we find local artisans to provide it for us. And you can see it in our breakfast tart; it's an egg sandwich in a puff pastry shell made with organic free range eggs" says owner, Jesse Furman.
