Legendary artist Brice Marden's show opened at Matthew Marks Gallery. His daughter Mirabelle, an OC friend and Blog contributor, sent us some snaps of her family (which includes THE SMILE'S CHEF MELIA) at the show, as well as pics of her dad at work on the island of Hydra. Check it out!

Last Friday at Matthew Marks, Brice Marden's exhibition showing his latest slew of work opened. In one of the gallery's 22nd Street spaces, the serene, nine-painting piece Ru Ware Project (2007-2012) takes its cue from the rare ancient Chinese pottery of the same name (one piece is even on display, encased). The pale blues of its panels range from periwinkle and sea green to grey, meant to evoke the colors of the sky after rain.

A few doors down, Marden's Mondrian-esque painted marble slabs feature graphite lines and oil. The marble, which shines like salt rock, is a subtly sparkling canvas for the thin, transparent oil paint and the bold graphite traces. The seemingly incongruous materials come together in wonderfully simple geometric works, their saline roughness lending them an organic feel. The fifteen pieces were completed last year on the Greek island of Hydra, the Mediterranean destination for the Basel/biennale crowd since 2009 which, just about a year ago, housed Doug Aitken's 'Black Mirror' starring Chloë Sevigny.

On display through June 23, 2012.
