Peter Saul at Mary Boone Gallery

Currently up at Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea is an exhibition of Peter Saul's most recent work. Full of lumpy, cartoonish shapes, goofy characters, and garish colors, the jumbled canvasses are cheeky and humorous albeit perverse, piquant, and politically charged. Food in different permutations––a juicy dripping ham, halved lemons, golden grilled BLTs, and even two fat fornicating slices of cake––is a recurring theme. Gluttony takes on the form of a Wall Street player lounging over the dead body of a C.E.O. next to piles of cash. Saul doesn't forgo the irreverence when invoking Pop Art and Expressionism either. (Raccoons wearing hats that together spell out "P-O-L-L-O-C-K", for instance, doodle with paintbrushes). The show runs though April 28, 2012 and is well worth the visit.
