'Locals Only' is a column in which we ask friends from Argentina, our featured country, where they like to eat, thrift, hide out, and hang out in their homeland.
This week Alejo and Javier, the brothers behind the menswear label Hermanos Estebecorena (try saying that after a few glasses of Fernet), take us on a tour of things to see, do, and eat in Buenos Aires.
Place for a low-key dinner with friends: Sudestada Restaurant. And Home Hotel is also especially good for Sunday brunch!
Restaurant for a first date: Tegui
Spot to babe watch: Most of Palermo is crawling with eye candy on a Saturday afternoon... Oui Oui and its surrounding area in particular.
Gallery: Elsi del Rio or Miau Miau
Book shop: La Teatral, a tiny antique bookstore in Belgrano
Place to get coffee: You can find very good coffee close to San Telmo in a historic tango place called La Puerto Rico.
Vintage furniture store: Gabriel del Campo Antigüedades, if the owner likes you, he'll show you his "not for everybody" merchandise.
Best choripan: La Dorita
Best alfajor cookie: It sounds obvious but Havannas, which you can find everywhere in BA.
Barrio to spend your Sunday: Palermo Hollywood
Place for a weekend getaway: The Tigre delta, on a boat. And if you have time and a good boat friend, go to Carmelo, Rio Negro, or Colonia in Uruguay.
The one thing you always bring back with you from visiting Argentina:
People always ask for alfajores and candy—there's a pretty interesting variety of sweet stuff at BA kiosks you can try: Vauquita (a solid square of dulce de leche), Rhodesia (a chocolate-coated wafer), Refresco (mint candies), DRF drops (the anise flavor is the best), Bananita Dolca (very kitsch chocolate-coated, banana flavor candy), Corazoncitos Dorins (heart-shaped drops in a cute box), Caramelos Media Hora ("half an hour candy"), Pico Dulce lollipops.... Those are some of the most traditional local candies, but there are others. Go and explore!
