'Don't Cry—Work' Says Bernhard Willhelm

Since making his design debut in 1999, Bernhard Willhelm has made it clear that no one can tell him what to do. With his spontaneous, convention-breaking collections and numerous Camper collaborations (here, standout floral high-tops) that managed to turn the sneaker game on its head, the recent LA transplant by way of Paris has remained a mainstay in his own raucous fashion world.

Fittingly, just in time for another round of Fashion Week, Willhelm will unveil his new designs at MOCA Los Angeles, in an exhibition cleverly titled Bernhard Willhelm 3000: When Fashion Shows Danger Then Fashion Is The Danger. Mixing his knack for blurring the lines between art and fashion, the exhibition will include video, photographs, and sculptural installations curated by Willhelm.

While the fashion provocateur is no stranger to exhibiting his work at museums (he's shown in galleries everywhere from Antwerp to the Netherlands), this marks the first time he will debut a collection at a world-renowned exhibition space. We sent the designers a few questions ahead of the exhibition opening, and check out the photograph above, an exclusive sneak peek of Bernhard Willhelm 3000.

OPENING
CEREMONY: Explain"When Fashion Shows The Danger Then Fashion Is The Danger"
BERNHARD WILLHELM: Fashion is simply what you project into it. Fashion is about creating an image.

Tell us what is happening in this photo. What is the inspiration?
Cockadoos and tumeric hairdye—it's an experiment.

Fashion in the 22nd century—what do you imagine the human race to wear?
I have no expectations towards humanity. The question is, will our poor planet survive humanity?

Do you prefer to be a trendsetter, or a classic?
I prefer big black cock.
