Mr. A's NYC Debut: André Saraiva at Half Gallery

This past weekend's shows weren't only about clothing collections. In his first-ever solo exhibition in New York, André Saraiva showed a charming series of watercolor love notes and graffitied French mailboxes––the kind he used to tag all over Paris. The show feels personal not only because of how strongly the artist's playful, dexterous hand is felt in each of the hand-painted works, but also because it reveals André as somewhat of a poetry buff. Incorporating romantic quotes by Jacques Prévert and Henry Miller, André's works are both sentimental and humorously salacious. (If you care to Google the French word "cyprine" from his "Bank of André" dollar bill, you might gain a quick lesson in sex ed., for example.) We stopped by the opening at Half Gallery and popped into the back room, where we were pleasantly surprised to find colette's Sarah Andelman hanging with André and Bill Powers, among others. Have a look at the pics!

Love Letters is on view through March 3, 2012.
