Post-Soviet Sunrise: Gosha Rubchinskiy Spring/Summer 2014

Six years ago, Moscow-based cult streetwear designer GOSHA RUBCHINSKIY launched his first collection, “Evil Empire,” an exploration and interpretation of post-Soviet subcultures. Gosha’s subsequent collections have built on this scaffolding, looking to Russia’s 90s-era stark skaters and club kids as sites of both aesthetic design inspiration and cultural analysis. This collection similarly draws upon the revival of a more globalized skate style, but couched within a 80s punk nexus that pays homage to Gosha’s homegrown scene. Collaborating with Ukrainian artist IGOR OKUNIEV, Gosha’s SS14 efforts reference the Soviet Union’s Leningrad music scenes (specifically bands like Auktyon and AVIA) through a form of street semiotics, most notably, Okuniev’s “sunrise” logos weaved throughout the collection. Continually serving as a bridge between past and present, Gosha’s self-shot lookbooks, amalgamations of archival videos, and straightforward starkness work to create and sustain a cross-generational youth culture.
