At the sight of Moroccan Berber rugs padding the floor and chairs of vivid red (the kind you see on bright Balkan folk dresses), attendees at the Altuzarra Fall/Winter 2012 show could sense they were in for something exotic before the lights even dimmed. But no one quite anticipated the spectacular story of a glamorous, worldly chameleon and traveling sophisticate that the designer sent down the runway.
Jangling gold medallions, pompoms, and swooshing fringes lent the collection Eastern sashay, while military tailoring, high-impact fur on tall collars and broad shoulders, and thigh-high boots made the collection less Bollywood, more bustling-around-Paris-and-staying-at-the-Bristol. The character that originally sent Altuzarra's imagination sailing into the faraway was the suave seafarer Corto Maltese, from the cult Italian comic strip by Hugo Pratt.
