Rodarte Fall/Winter 2014: New York Fashion Week

It’s no secret that Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte are big Star Wars fans. With a childhood spent in Santa Cruz and a fascination for the annals of pop culture, the Mulleavys have often discussed the films as creative touchstones. And who can forget when George Lucas himself sat front row at their show in 2012? So when evening gowns printed with stills from the original Star Wars movies closed today’s Rodarte Fall/Winter 2014 show, it felt natural and all kinds of right.

Although the Star Wars gowns were the undeniable, Instagrammable show-stoppers, there was a lot to love in this collection. And much of it felt drawn from the evolving 1977 culture that spawned both the first installment of Lucas’ blockbuster series as well as Saturday Night Fever. Kate and Laura were certainly thinking about the impact of disco-era glitter with their textile game, including sparkly fishtails on dresses, shimmery stoles and berets, and most notably, high-octane glittered coats in copper, turquoise, and fuschia.

Beyond space fantasy and disco escapism the collection showcased quite a bit of 70s mundanity, updated for fashion folk. Space-dyed turtlenecks, high-waisted pants, and macrame vests featured in several looks, with custom retro eyeglasses by Oliver Peoples.

On the beauty side, Rodarte regulars hair stylist Odile Gilbert and makeup artist James Kaliardos conjured a cool gothic babysitter look, with super-long, side-parted hair, dark burgundy eyeshadow and a hint of lilac shimmer on the lips.
