Band of Outsiders Men's Fall/Winter 2014: New York Fashion Week

After shooting Frank Ocean outside the Los Angeles Times building for his Fall/Winter 2013 lookbook, Scott Sternberg dedicated his Band of Outsiders Fall/Winter 2014 collection to the death of print media, specifically the newspaper. The mood of the presentation was quiet and solemn, with the only soundtrack being the distinctive sound of typing on a typewriter. Four looks were presented at a time, ranging from denim gradients and polka dots—meant to reference the printing process and punctuation, respectively—to British-prep-inspired tartan trousers and workwear details. With the presence of pageboy hats in some looks, there was a Newsies vibe to the clothing: classic, comfortable, and rather humble. A printed T-shirt with an image from a personals ad and stripes created by newspaper columns repeated asked us to remember that although utilitarian at the core, print media was a creative craft. There wasn't anything groundbreaking in the shapes but it's that consistency that endears Band of Outsiders to its extremely loyal following. If only the same could be said for be print, but then again, we wouldn't have this collection.
