KYE Fall/Winter 2014: New York Fashion Week

The prints change from season to season, but Kathleen Kye has both the oversized and the skinny silhouette on lockdown. The KYE Fall/Winter 2014 collection was demure color-wise compared to her past looks―no metallics or shocking neon graffiti this time around―but her distinctive taste for complex patterns and shapes shone through even more with the easy color-blocking. Chain-link motifs were seen in intarsia sweaters and pressed into neoprene fabrics. "It gives the piece a heavy look, but it's really lightweight," Kathleen said of the technique. "This collection focuses on contrasts, and the chains link between two worlds." As with every collection, the emphasis was on youth culture, which has been the impetus for KYE's aesthetic since her time at Central Saint Martins. This time around, the overarching theme might also have been a struggle with identity that's even more prevelant amongst today's teenagers, who have access to more potential beliefs and looks than ever before via the Internet. But despite all this introspection of "Who am I?", or perhaps because of it, Kathleen Kye seems to know exactly who she is as a designer, and what she wants her line to be.
