Inside the back room of Black Bear Bar in Williamsburg last night the floor was covered with folding white chairs arranged to form a makeshift movie theater. A little after 7 PM, the seats started to fill with everyone from documentary enthusiasts to dirt bike riders to Raekwon to members of the A$AP Mob, a pool of guests who hooted and hollered through the film's highs and lows.
The film, 12 O’Clock Boys, is a documentary that chronicles the ambitions of a young boy from Baltimore named Pug to join the dirt bike gang by the same name. Last night, Opening Ceremony, Oscilloscope Laboratories, and Okayplayer threw a party for the New York City premiere of the movie, inviting moviegoers and OC family and friends to dance to tunes by DJs J-Cush, Brenmar, and Jubilee, snap pics in the Bosco photobooth, and mingle in between the motorcycles propped up in the bar’s lobby—fitting decor for the occasion.
Considering some A$AP Mobbers are avid dirt bike riders, it only made sense that A$AP Rocky and co. came out to support the film. “Fucking amazing. Crazy. It was real,” Rocky said after the screening, rendered almost speechless.
Turns out there were more than a few bikers in the audience hailing from cities like Philadelphia and even our very own New York City.
“See this the thing y'all not really getting. It’s just not a Baltimore thing,” clarified Coco, Pug’s mother and undoubtedly the Grace Coddington to 12 O’Clock Boys' September Issue. “It’s a worldwide thing. We family. We not killin’, robbin’, selling drugs, nothing. It’s a flock, like a flock of birds. It’s a flock of bikes.”
That community was evident in the eclectic crowd of party goers who stuck around in the back room long after the party had gotten underway. Those there late were treated to a special surprise when Pug emerged from the second floor of Black Bear with a mountain bike almost twice his size and proceeded to pop a series of wheelies in the crowd. True to the bike-obsessed spirit he displayed in the film, even indoors Pug managed to find some wheels.
