BITES ON A BUDGET is a toothsome and tasty series where members of the OC family forage for great food––under $10!
Still shaking from the cold, we were greeted by co-owner Mike Tang, who opened the restaurant only two months ago with his business partner Chris Wong. He offered us hot tea with lemon and honey to recover from the blizzard raging outside. Mike's gesture speaks to Breakroom's vibe: it’s laid back and familiar, with a graffiti-covered wall and a long bar that seats no more than a dozen guests.
Shortly after ordering at the counter from a menu of mostly burgers and tacos, a red food tray landed in front of us. Grace picked up her crispy tempura fish sandwich ($6.95)––delicious––and I my original hamburger ($6.95), a classic Angus beef burger that made up for not being the most photogenic with its juiciness and flavor. The Breakroom Fries ($5.95) that we decided to share are a glorious mess of runny egg, bacon, onions, cheese, jalapeños, and pork belly, drizzled in a special house sauce––Breakroom’s own take on chipotle mayo.
After clearing our tray, Grace and I started to layer on our outerwear again, when Mike’s asked, "Want another cup of tea before you go?" It’s hard not to love Breakroom.

Yesterday, my fellow OC Worldwide intern Grace and I looked out the window of the office and skeptically back at each other. Did we really want to defy the weather gods and walk through the snowstorm covering New York with whirling snow, just to get to a new restaurant we'd heard about? We took our sweet time deciding, but eventually our curiosity and rumbling stomaches got the best of us, and we ventured out into the snow to Chinatown's Breakroom.

Defrosting with a hot cup of tea with honey and lemon!
The Tempura Fish Sandwich with catfish, cheese, house slaw & pickled onions, and a deliciously messy plate of Breakroom Fries: runny egg, bacon, onions, cheese, jalapeños and pork belly. The menu also offers an equally messy Breakroom Burger, if you're feeling adventurous. Mike behind the counter (to the left) checking in on us to see if we've recovered from the cold yet!
