Pale Fire: Kenzo Pre-Fall 2014 Presentation

Like a moth to the flame, we were pulled in today by the vibrant Kenzo Pre-Fall 2014 collection. The collection was inspired by the American Northwest and the notion that everyday life isn't always as it seems. "Fire was also an important concept for this collection," OC founder/Kenzo creative director Humberto Leon said of his and Carol Lim's direction. "It's something that you're a little bit afraid of, but still drawn to." Following the Twin Peaks vibe, the lineup was all about contrasts, an idea that was immediately present in using the grandiose pre-war library of The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen as a backdrop for the modern pieces. OC friend Andrew Kuo prepared a deep, dark soundtrack that was only emphasized by the models appearing in the balconies above, looming over the seats at the beginning of the show. It created a tense start that softened as the models floated down to the makeshift stage made of stepladders and tables.

Closer inspection of the clothing showed patterns inspired by TV static, fluorescent lighting, and of course, fire. The word appeared across sweaters and clutches, with flames licking the backside of the garments. Grids were a common motif as well, the strict angles on some garments making the distorted fluo-plaid prints all the more distinct. But for all the heat and rigid geometry, Kenzo's woman was decidedly more feminine this season, wearing prim shift dresses, long brushed wool coats, and a twist on the ever-ladylike cap toe pump. Humberto also pointed out several pieces that wrap around the body, emphasizing "the functionality of the northwest." Given the unpredictability of the climate in the northwest that often makes battling the elements less than fashion-friendly, and having just seen Bill Cunningham's video on NYC's blizzard fashion, I found Kenzo's "femme functionale" an incredible inspiration for dressing well in inclement weather.
