This London Collections: Men's fashion week, the lovely style blogger Susie Bubble reports, just for OC!

Whatever you do, don't call Astrid Andersen's Fall/Winter 2014 collection "gangster". The menswear designer wrinkled her nose at the accusation backstage. “I don't think it's gangster but it does reference American hip-hop culture,” she said. "It's what I'm attracted to. For me, it's just a confidence. Whenever someone is that confident and he's wearing a long fur coat, it's immediately gangster––but that's not necessarily the case." Confidence is definitely required when donning a beautiful astrakhan basketball shirt or head-to-toe baby blue satin. Nicolas Winding Refn's film Only God Forgives was Andersen's reference point, but as I summarized in my Instagram caption: if TLC dressed their boyfriends in their 90s heyday, this collection would most likely have been the results.

Then again, Andersen is merely re-asserting what she does best––making clothes for hot boyz, as the show's Missy Elliot soundtrack went. The designer doth protested when she said it was harder to be sexy in the winter, but rest assured, her boyz were hot with their hair straight and parted in the center, swaggering about in silk brocade balloning sweatpants and body-conscious tops. Even her baggy tracksuit sets had a carnal quality about them as they came down the runway, emblazoned with her marbled and distorted logo, or covered with her beloved lace. Straightforward "gangster" garb or streetwear, this isn't. A Japanese buyer in the audience tapped into the nuances by turning up wearing Astrid Andersen paired with a vintage Chinese embroidered robe. Andersen certainly seems to be enjoying exposing the subtleties of archetypal streetwear.
