Brunch on a Budget: $8 at Forgetmenot

BITES ON A BUDGET is a toothsome and tasty series where members of the OC family forage for great food––under $10! This week, we explore uncharted territory: brunch.

They say the cause is the best cure. This was especially true the morning we headed back to the LES bar Forgetmenot, after indulging ourselves the night before in their cocktail menu and cheap beer. “Blood Mary?” the bartender greeted us as we walked in. It was tempting but a little too soon: the thought of vodka triggered an unpleasant protest from my stomach. We ordered coffees and hot ciders instead, sitting at the bar and scouring a menu filled with delicious sounding brunch options as we waited for a table.

Having tried their amazing egg sandwich ($6) before, I decided to go large this time with the breakfast burrito ($8), a bursting wrap of soft-scrambled eggs, chorizo, potatoes, homemade guac, and chipotle mayo. And a side of Greek fries ($8, with oregano and crumbed feta), because why not? Sam ordered a big plate of nachos ($12) with chili, cheddar, and a lot of guac, while Heather ordered a skirt steak sandwich ($14) which came with red pepper, arugula, edam, and shallot-pepper mayo. Lina went for a fruit bowl ($8) that was surprisingly hearty—apples, blueberries, and strawberries were mixed yogurt and drizzled with a generous amount of honey.

Around us LES locals ate loudly and hungrily, much like us, exchanging drunken stories from the night before. We picked at our food even after we were stuffed, enjoying the dim atmosphere and wishing we could sink into our chairs' cushions and take naps. But after another round of juices and coffees we finally felt like ourselves again, ready to tackle our Saturdays.
