In SOUND CHECK, we check in with some of our favorite musicians.
It's a known fact that we love the belles of Bleached. The Cali-cool Clavin sisters, Jennifer and Jessica, have perfected the formula of 70s punk meets melodic rock-and-roll with endearing lyrics. Recently, we met up with the babes and their bassist Micayla Grace in Austin to talk strange gifts from fans and more.
Fill in the blanks:
Our band is Bleached and our music is garage-punk, pop, and rock-and-roll.
As teenagers, who did you admire for their style?
Jennifer: Debbie Harry and Siouxsie Sioux
Jessica: Nico, Lorna Doom from The Germs, and sometimes Kirk Hammett from Metallica.
Micayla: I was really inspired by the 60s and 80s, so Marianne Faithfull and Elizabeth Shue… and Molly Ringwald!
Favorite thing to do when you’re not playing music?
Jennifer: I really like to garden. I have a little garden, and I do puzzles.
Jessica: I’ve been trying to learn how to cook and I've been doing some directing––I just made a music video for our band… And partying!
Micayla: Video editing, cooking, walking, and meditating.
What’s the strangest thing a fan has given you?
Jennifer: A flat penny from a train track, but it looked like they flattened it themselves in their backyard or something. And a single card from a card deck with otters on it.
Jessica & Micayla: Someone did a drawing of us performing live at [this year's] Fun Fun Fun Fest on a paper plate. We love when we get drawings.
What is your spirit animal?
Jennifer: A jaguar
Jessica: We just figured this out! I always wanted it to be a horse, but we figured out mine is a crow because I know when the dead is resurrecting and I have a good judge of character.
Micayla: And mine was also a bird––a hawk.
Where’s the weirdest place you’ve played?
On a boat that looked like a submarine in France. It made us realize we want to live on a boat one day.
What’s in the cards for you in the upcoming months?
We're just going to write a bunch of demos, and in January we get to go to Mammoth and in February, the Weezer Cruise, where we’re hosting a karaoke night!
