Is This Photo Masculine?

What do beautifully mangled car metal, mountains of sand, and naked men wrestling with dogs have in common? All are takes on masculinity, according to a new exhibit curated by Capricious Magazine around the theme.

Founded in 2004 by Swedish photographer Sophie Morner, Capricious stands out in the gaggle of photography magazines by dedicating each issue to a single theme. "It's very intuitive. I like to have themes that leave room for interpretation," says Sophie. And as of this month, Capricious also opened a gallery space, Capricious 88, on New York City's Lower East Side where it will exhibit the work of contributors.

I stopped by Capricious 88's inaugural opening last Sunday to check out prints of the works included in the Masculine issue. Each work represented a unique interpretaton of what it means to be male: While Nicolai Howalt's Car Crash Studies at first glance look like abstract paintings, after a few moments you can't help but see teenage muscle cars and budding sexuality in the mangled metal. Other artists took a more literal interpretation of maculinity: a photograph of Anders Petersen, for instance, depicts anonymous nude men, one wresting with a dog and the other lounging on a bed.

"I was curious about what people would submit on such literal theme," says Morner. "And I was curious if people would push boundaries a bit, beyond genitalia and obvious gender-bending."
