As the summer in New York comes to a close, Printed Matter and MoMA PS1 present the eighth annual NY Art Book Fair. With more than 280 booksellers from twenty different countries all over the world, the fair is a haven for independent publishers, artists, books and zines through September 22nd.
Opening night (Thursday) was a huge success. And while I was one of the hundreds hustling their work, a highlight for me was up-and-coming artist/photographer Stephen McClintock's work. Stephen, who hails from Florida and now resides in Brooklyn, is showcasing his two self-released publications. One is a limited run of his newest work Senior Prom, a voyeuristic approach to modern sexual encounters featuring screen grabs from a personal sex tape, which I found both inconspicuous, intimate, and playfully endearing. The other is a rerelease of his first booklet, Shop Lifters Unite, alongside work from his photography portfolio––an overwhelming plethora of DIY art zines. Leave it to the NYABF to allow you to find refuge in things refreshing, honest, and original.
The fair also houses independent publishing celebrities, like our good friend Lele Saveri's The Newsstand, which is featuring exclusive 1/1 runs of Ari Marcoupolous prints and books by Todd Jordan. Also in the roster are LA's DeadBeat Club and heavy hitters like Gagosian, Aperture, Ommu and Richardson Mag. The NYABF is a real meat market for everything art, design, photography, and illustration; prepare to lose yourself in a real-life labyrinth with titles better than stand-alone bookstore in the world. Cash your paychecks, because you won't want to be leaving empty handed––promise!
