Suede, suiting, and wool that looked like shag carpeting. It may sound like a heavy mix, but the spring collection Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez showed yesterday was light as air. Walking through a lofty studio space, models gave off the NYC cool girl vibes that Jack and Lazaro have owned for the last decade, but with a slightly more bohemian feel. Suede came in burgundy (fashioned into a double-layered dress) and buttercream (on an open-fronted tunic top), and textures were a focal point throughout. While the designers cited furniture designer Sergio Rodrigues and the Arte Povera movement as influences, skirts with sun-burst pleats lined with metallic foil and shimmering lurex dresses brought to mind the mineral texture of Jay DeFeo's The Rose—a visual that sat well with the mid-century feel of the palette. Culminating in a sequence of culottes and cropped metallic tops that looked like breastplates, the spring collection was a refined and powerful Proenza moment.
