Last season, Kate and Laura Mulleavy looked to their native Santa Cruz for inspiration. For Spring/Summer 2014 things were looking more Rodeo Drive than tie-dye-touting beach town. In an electric 80s-fueled outing today, the designers' spring girl proved she knew how to show some skin—the Rodarte way. Filled with fringing, big shoulders, short shorts, and lamé—not to mention a zoo of animal prints—the collection stayed true to the designers' intricate craft-based aesthetic while also conjuring the world of fast-car-driving, diamanté-loving LA ladies. Models strutted through an atmospheric set (created by longtime collaborator Alex de Betak) in which fluorescent lighting bounced off beaded tasseled bras and satin dresses embroidered with gold scorpions. Tying the looks together, wide western belts hung across hips and padlock jewelry decorated necks and ears. The biggest surprise of the show though came about a third of the way through, when a model walked out in a backwards baseball cap and plaid shirt. Admittedly, that shirt was made from printed silk, but spring's Rodarte girl was certainly one of the most badass to date.
