Trace the Trend: Leather Jackets

From bucket hats to Birkenstocks, what goes around comes back around. In "TRACE THE TREND," we take a look at our favorite pieces of the moment as worn by our favorite icons.

OK, so leather jackets aren't really a "trend," any more than underwear is. In fact they're almost the polar opposite of a trend they're such a permanent feature. But that doesn't mean they haven't evolved over the last hundred or so years since they entered our wardrobes. Peaking notably in the 1991 Peter Lindbergh-shot and Grace Coddington-styled Vogue editorial "Wild At Heart" (one of our all-time favorites), the leather jacket's history is dotted with Iconic (with a capital I) moments. As seen in the photos below, everyone from Sid Vicious to Francoise Hardy has had a soft spot for a soft leather. Popularized after the Second World War, during which they were worn by fighter pilots for warmth, leather jackets went mainstream in the late 40s and 50s. And happily, as a new crop of arrivals at OC shows, they aren't going anywhere.
