Vintage cheerleading uniforms and Smiths T-shirts aside, the best thing to come out of my local Goodwill has to be the Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion soundtrack my brother dug up one rainy afternoon. Cruising into the Barnstable High School parking lot at 7:10 each morning was only made bearable by blasting the Post-it pioneers’ perfect blend of 80s chart toppers, a mix unarguably anchored by tomorrow's birthday babe Belinda Carlisle. Featuring the Go-Go’s greats “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed” as well as Belinda’s own “Heaven is a Place on Earth,” the karaoke-ready soundtrack is just the right amount of Carlisle for any car ride.
Before Belinda became the powerhouse front woman for one of the most successful female groups of all time, she played drums for short-lived punk outfit the Germs, under the moniker Dottie Danger. After the Germs split, Carlisle joined forces with Jane Wiedlin, Gina Schock, Charlotte Caffey, and Kathy Valentine to form The Go-Go’s, producing one of the seminal sounds of the 80s. The group’s 1981 debut album, Beauty and the Beat, remains among the most successful first efforts in music history, and the only album entirely written and recorded by an all-female band to top the Billboard charts.
Swapping her new wave roots for power pop production, Belinda continued her reign over the 80s airwaves even after The Go-Go’s disbandment in 1985. In honor of her birthday tomorrow, we salute Belinda, the Buddhist vegetarian glamor shot professional (seriously LOOK at the face she is constantly serving) for teaching us a thing or two about girl power when Baby Spice was still in diapers.
