In "Straight Trippin'," OC friends and family share tidbits from their latest travels. First up is stylist Catherine Newell-Hanson (you may remember her supreme skills from our swim editorial, Calendar Boys + Girls), who just got back from Mexico!
Name: Catherine Newell-Hanson
Occupation: Stylist
Travel destination: Mexico City
Carry-on necessities: Sunglasses and iPad
Reading materials: Diane Arbus: A Biography
Most over-played tracks on your iPod this trip: The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds and Paul Simon's Graceland. I went to Mexico straight from Amsterdam, so I needed something to counteract the overload of techno and Euro-pop.
Favorite outfit to travel in: Black jeans, black Céline slip-on sneakers, a white T-shirt, and a grey sweatshirt by Isabel Marant
Highlight of your trip: Visiting Frida Kahlo's studio and seeing all her paints, brushes, and artifacts—which include incredible photographs like her 1937 feature in Vogue and one of Trotsky as her houseguest. I also enjoyed looking at all of her clothes and accessories, from sunglasses to a full-body cast covered in painting. It was fascinating and really moving––my one thing not to miss! Other highlights of my trip include climbing the Aztec pyramids at Teotihuacan with my friends (after very little sleep) before walking miles through the city, and margaritas at the San Angel Inn.
Souvenirs you brought back: A two-day hangover, a tiny bit of a suntan, and a bottle of mezcal.
