Last night Apology magazine hosted Flowers & Candy, a group show featuring photographs, paintings, drawings, and poems curated by founding editor Jesse Pearson at agnès b., our Howard Street neighbor. The selection of artists includes the publication's friends and collaborators, like Roe Ethridge, Terry Richardson, Tim Barber, Tara Sinn, Jerry Hsu, Sandy Kim, Richard Kern, and more. Inspired by the two most recognized gifts of remorse, the show presents a variety of works that range from elegant to comical. Delicate photographs of roses and bouquets are paired with not-so-innocent shots of people enjoying candy. A poem by Eileen Myles, printed on plain paper that was nailed crudely to the wall by the entrance, set the tone for the event. Titled "To My Flowers," it reads, "Why did you just come and die."
As an added bonus, a whole table was covered with delectable drinks and sweets. There was bubble gum, rock candy, candied fennel seed Bastoncini by Brooks Headley of Del Posto restaurant. The beverages were also extra sumptuous, with combinations like rosemary lemonade and rhubarb gin. Good art, good reads and tasty treats made for an opening night that was definitely delicious. Now that’s nothing to say sorry about.
The second issue of Apology will be available soon at Opening Ceremony.
