Torey Thornton at Karma Gallery

Torey Thornton's first solo show at Karma opened last week. Seven works on paper are up on display, and each of them is a mixture of different media: acrylic, spray paint, charcoal, graphite, ink, collage on paper––even hemp and cat hair. The profusion of materials goes along with the profusion of shapes and colors. He paints strange figures you can hardly identify: are they joyful cartoons characters, or harmful creatures? Maybe both. Together with total freedom in his choice of materials, Torey's palette is strikingly vivid and enthusiastic. His stroke is energetic, goofy, and rejuvenating all at the same time, giving these works a life of their own.
