Alchemical at Steven Kasher Gallery

Moon rocks, stardust, red lightning, and yellow waterfalls are just some of the otherworldly elements that haunt the walls of Steven Kasher Gallery‘s newest show, Alchemical, curated by Kevin Moore. The exhibition features 25 works by 19 contemporary artists including Anne Collier, Roe Ethridge, Ryan McGinley, David Benjamin Sherry, James Welling, and Hannah Whitaker. Mainly comprised of photographs, the exhibit also showcases an electrifying neon sculpture by Matthew Spiegelman and a wall projection by Daniel Lefcourt.

The show is not about chemistry or even photography. Rather, it's about the miracles and mysteries of the universe and the impulse to transform a landscape of economic disparity and environmental disaster into inspiration. Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson’s images of stagnant desert terrain are mutated by strange green smoke emerging from the brush. Spectacular scenes of an emerald night sky by Ryan McGinley and red lightning cutting through darkness by Anne Collier look as if they were taken before an extraterrestrial encounter. And A.K. Burns' grainy pictures seem to have been snapped during a lunar landing.

On a brighter note, Hannah Whitaker’s piece Bad Photographer is an enchanting mix of pink particles and fairy dust, while David Benjamin Sherry’s super saturated image of Bridalveil Falls in Yosemite tempts you to take a dip in the golden waters. From dark to light, eerie to cheery, Alchemical's power to turn ordinary environments into those of supreme wonder is photographic alchemy.
