Evan Hecox & Friends at Joshua Liner Gallery

On a scorching hot day in the city, OC Online's James and I decided to celebrate 7/11 Day the right way. First, we fought a mob of Slurpee fiends at 7-Eleven to get our hands on some icy Coca-Cola bevs. Then, we walked over to Joshua Liner Gallery with our trophies in hand to attend the opening reception of Folklore. Curated by artist Evan Hecox, the exhibit boasts a roster of 16 artists whose art, photography, and design are observational narratives of modern culture.

Hecox's two works, for example, isolate a place and time with stark paintings on treated vintage newspaper. In the back of the gallery, photographer Andrew Paynter's works, titled North and South, take you on a voyeuristic stroll with a shadowy couple, and Ed Templeton's photographs of young couples making out are like modern-day Goddard couples against the world. On a cheekier note, British artist and illustrator Stevie Gee captures the joys and pains of skateboarding, with greaser heads and "Whip Lash" painted on nunchuck boards.

The gallery was packed with mostly skater friends and fans of these artists, who have visually shaped the skateboarding world in the past twenty years. Also featured in the exhibit are Andy Jenkins, Stephen Powers, Peter Sutherland, Cody Hudson, Nathaniel Russell, Geoff McFetridge, Benjamin Deberdt, Nigel Peake, Serena Mitnik-Miller, and Thomas Campbell. For an art experience that’s as refreshing as that first bite into a watermelon on a hot summer night, catch this exhibit before it closes next month.

Through August 2, 2013.
