Bushwick Open Studios at 226 Troutman

A few weeks ago, I took a slow G train to Bushwick to meet up with my dear friend and curator Claire Lachow. As I'm new to New York, Claire showed me around Bushwick and took me to brunch. While I forced myself to enjoy my Bloody Mary, she told me about Bushwick Open Studios: a three-day arts and culture festival where exhibition spaces are volunteered by members of the Bushwick art community. As an aspiring photographer and filmmaker, I jumped at Claire's offer to join her show at 226 Troutman.

The Friday before the show was a big rush and I would be lying if I said I was organized. Earlier that day, I had visions of myself sunbathing in the backyard, waiting for the show to begin. But after a lot of running around the city in the scorching heat to gather materials, I made it to the studio just in time for the air-conditioner to break down! After a few installing-related hissy fits tempered by several refreshing vodka popsicles, I finally got my photos up on the wall. In the little time that remained, I tried to put myself together, faking a calm and effortless look. Just when I thought I had been stood up, my OC pals showed up in support.

That Sunday was my turn to take charge of the makeshift gallery. It was pretty strange and wonderful to have people come in off the street to view our work and when the visitors whispered their thoughts in front of my work, I wanted to shout,  "What was that? What did you say?" If only I had extraordinary hearing! It was a great weekend and experience—well worth the sweat and tears and a great way to start the summer!
